The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society - my pledge for donations, it's a race for a cure to save lives
Long time runner, first time participant, yay!
Hey folks, Jennifer speaking and I want to welcome you to my Team In Training home page! This is the first step that you've taken, along with me, to help me help others...and I'm thanking you for simply clicking here...and hopefully you'll continue to read on and pass the word forward to others you think can help. To start off here is a fact you may or may not know: approximately 110,960 Americans will be diagnosed with a form of blood cancer. Here's the second fact you may or may not know: this is my first endurance event...yes my very first marathon run! Ask me if I'm excited...YES! Ask me if I'm going to complete all 26.2 miles...YES! Ask me if I'm proud...ABSOLUTELY!!! I, like the hundreds of other trainees, have their own sentimental reasons why they are running. For me, it all started as a pleasant surprise, something I never imagined. I had recently returned to the gym and said to myself I wanted to change my life and wanted something more meaningful, something to keep my eye on, a goal, a challenge, a pinnacle point to be humbled to mention but oh so proud to talk about. But ask me if I had ever imagined myself running a marathon...uhh NO WAY! But you look at me now and you see me eager, focused and learning to live my life differently. A small sacrifice if you ask me! Who, what, when, where, why?... Who am I? Well briefly I am just a city gal. I am an individual who cares for those and cares deeply about herself. I am the one person you can turn to when you need a friend. I am that one that will always cheer you on and I am the one that can do what I set my mind to. I am driven! I am a runner for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. What is this passage about? This mission, for me, is about reaching out to those that can help me. It's for a good cause, a great cause if you ask me. It is my way of giving back. I might be giving back to someone I may never meet. I might even be giving back to a neighbor I haven't met yet. I might be giving back to someone that has been waiting or giving hope to a family that is suffering. When is my endurance event? Where am I due to run? I am due to run a full marathon on January 31, 2010. This date may seem far away but if you ask me time is of the essence and it is certainly ticking quicker than I can keep track of. So with your help I might just make it! Why did I choose this event? Why did I choose to live my life as I have never lived it before? I am doing this because I am set here to make a difference...in one way or another. So now that I've briefly answered that, let me get into my thoughts - Exactly how did this all begin for me? It happens to be that one day I received a postcard asking if I wanted to help make a difference. I was all for it! So without hesitation I logged on and enrolled myself and marked my calendar for the first seminar. As that Saturday morning came to life I felt the butterfly feeling. Was it a scared feeling you ask...but of course! That would be my response yet deep down inside I knew I would be able to do it. As the seminar rolled along and I listened to the staff speak, heard the many stories of accomplishments and I heard stories of the losses. I was ready more than ever. With great honor I wrote the check, sponsored myself and was set to participate! I had officially joined The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. Why did I choose to participate? Well there are several reasons that can answer that question. One of the most important factors was because if I participate, I help others and how is that done, how is it paid forward? Well take for example the process one goes thru when dealing with a cancer of the blood. The initial shock that they have been diagnosed with a cancer of the blood is enough to bring moral down and sometimes feel pessimistic about the situation. The concept that there really isn't a scientifically proven medicinal cure for this is overwhelming. The drain that this disease puts one and their families thru is something unimaginable. The treatment they endure, to attempt to beat the disease, is something no one can imagine unless they've been there. So with that said - I choose to train diligently, remain focused on my goal and take this moment to let those know that I care enough to help them in a small way. In a nutshell, what's running 26.2 miles worth to me to save one life or hundreds of lives? It's a small token from me to them. Initially I signed up with the hopes of helping others, others I did not have a personal connection to but this all changed. Like a bomb dropped, the news traveled and I learned a family member was diagnosed with Leukemia. When I heard this my dedication was more personal than ever. The efforts the hospital put forth to try to aid him and have him defeat the disease failed and unfortunately on September 8, 2009 he lost the battle. Now I train with his name, Horacio Galli and my granddaddy Bolivar Mercado Sanoguel etched closely to my heart. Training and fund raising is a small way of giving to those in need. Offering them and the many others a chance to live by running a race seems pretty simple right? And to some aspect it is except this effort can not only be done alone. Yes the coming months will be filled with mental challenges and physical challenges but those are nothing in comparison to my thoughts on this disease. I am pleading for you to help me also. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and I need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure! Now if you would, just take a second and think about the times you have asked for help and just like that you were offered the helping hand. Or when you had a personal battle you was facing and all you had to do was turn around and someone was there to offer you that shoulder...well that is why I am doing this endurance event. I am confident that with every step on the road, every mile I run, I help to find a cure for blood cancers. I now place everything into this mission. Please make a donation and whether you contribute $10, $26.20 ($1 per mile I'm running) or even $100, every dollar makes a difference. Your donations help to support my participation in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. Your support helps advance LLS's mission. I run in memory of those lost, especially those dearly close to my heart my grandfather Bolivar Mercado Sanoguel and Horacio Galli. Thank you for your support! Always hoping for the best, Jennifer |
